National Recognition for HBHS
Friday, 12 February 2010 15:00
Olympic gold medallists Jonathan Edwards and Denise Lewis and England cricketer Claire Taylor presented Haydon Bridge High School and Sports College with the Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week Recognition Award. The award was accepted by John Dowler (Headteacher) during the Sports College Conference Gala Dinner at Telford on 10th -11th February 2010.
Given that there are over 500 schools with a specialism in sport or PE this is a fantastic recognition of all the superb work and commitment of students and staff at Haydon Bridge High School. Many conference delegates, who know the work of the school, expressed their delight that Haydon Bridge High School had been recognised for their exceptional work in engaging young people in sport. John Dowler spoke of his pride that the outstanding commitment of staff and students had been given such high profile national acknowledgement. He gave particular thanks to the PE department and Elizabeth Hicks who have planned and led a number of highly successful and varied Sport Weeks.
Liz added; "National School Sport Week 2009 at Haydon Bridge High School and Sports College involved 36 separate workshops or sessions, including activities as diverse as Aussie Rules Football, Morris Dancing and included a presentation from a paralympian. Over the five days our students clocked up 1407 hours of activity. Additionally through a day of coaching with Northumbria University students, our students raised £216 for a Zambian Aids and HIV project the students are involved with. HBHS students gained universal praise from the visiting coaches. Most importantly this week showed what can be achieved with £0 expenditure as coaches and speakers offered their services completely free of charge, an amazing achievement!"
The award will be officially presented to Haydon Bridge High School by a sporting personality at a ceremony in school sometime in the future.
Further details about the award can be found on the Youth Sport Trust website www.youthsporttrust.org
